LOOKING BACK IN HISTORY (PART 2)
‘Twas 62 years ago this month that the “Grand Opening” of the SAMISH ISLAND COMMUNITY CENTER took place—April 24, 1948, to be exact. Per the local newspaper, the doors officially opened at 8 pm. (they stayed up later in those days) to an “old-fashioned basket social” with visitors from Bay View and Bow Community Clubs attending, along with the large Samish Island contingent. A Seattle orchestra, the “Corn Shuckers,” provided the beat for old-time square dancing, but also played music for those the newspaper described as “modern stylists.” (See Susan and Fred Miller’s Samish Island, A History, pp. 204-05,)
TULIP TIME
The SV Herald Tulip Festival booklet recounts the history of tulip-growing in Skagit Valley. It all started when Mary Brown Stewart imported a few tulip bulbs from Holland in 1906. But the article fails to mention exactly where those pioneer bulbs were planted. The fact is Mary Stewart was a Samish Islander, and those early bulbs bloomed on a property we drive by shortly after entering the Island. When this new crop filled the Stewart fields, Mary initiated a bulb mail-order business, sending to customers as far away as New England.
By 1931, the Stewarts had outgrown their Samish fields, and had leased 5 acres on McLean Road, 7 years later buying 15 acres on Bradshaw. In 1954, Mary, and son Sam Stewart, owned “The Tulip Grange Bulb Farm”, then the largest such farm in the Valley. (But the little-known story is that it all began right HERE.

Lee Nelson, Pastor---Everyone welcome
We celebrate the 40th ANNIVERSARY of EARTH DAY on APRIL 22nd, and repeated below is the quote we printed for its 25th anniversay in 1995:
We are returning to our native place aftr a long absence, meeting once again with our kin in the earth community. For too long we have been away somewhere, entranced with our industrial world of wires and wheels, concrete and steel, and our unending highways where we race back and forth in continual frenzy. We have lost our sense of courtesy toward the earth and its inhabitants, our sense of gratitude, our capacity for the awesome quality of every earthly reality.......
