Shore Lines Banner

August 2009

I am in Washington DC for a time and missing Samish Island. I brought my cat, Webster, with me and he is adjusting quite well to city life. We have had wonderful weather this summer. For crabbing, clamming, walking, boating and deck sitting, it just can't get any better. Get out there and have some fun. --- Astrid

THE SAMISH ISLAND ARTS COMMITTEE
would like to thank all our wonderful friends and neighbors who helped make this year’s Summer Arts Festival a success.  We thank Tim and Sue Ratfield and Scott Blau for arranging parking areas, and Marilyn Gardner for letting committee members park close by.  We thank all the wonderful volunteers who greeted the vendors and helped with the setup on Friday and the cleanup on Saturday. We also acknowledge the Community Hall neighbors for putting up with the traffic and parked cars.
The Samish Island Arts Committee gives all the proceeds from this festival ($2022.70) to the Samish Island Community Club.  Thank you to the Board Members who helped with this event.  Thanks also to all islanders and their friends who came to shop, eat and enjoy. We appreciate all the island vendors for their contributions.

A big THANK YOU to Ric Reid who is retiring from 10 years of excellent leadership as president of the Board of Trustees of Samish Farms Water Association. During his tenure he has overseen major upgrades to our currently excellent system.

A Skagit Valley Herald photo (July 21) showed Crickett Knutzen, Amber Miller and Scott Colvin of the S.I. Volun-teer Fire Dept., cleaning up a brush fire by the beach near Blue Heron Rd. Crickett cautions Islanders to stay alert to fire danger and not be fooled by small amounts of rainfall that might come our way. Though surface weeds can look wet, a significant depth of dry earth below ground remains vulnerable to fire threat.

Good news from Kate Scott, president of the Board of Directors, Samish Council, Campfire U.S.A.: Judge Susan Cook from Skagit County ruled in Camp Kirby's favor that Camp Fire is in fact still using Camp Kirby as a "camp for children and for Camp Fire". The original lawsuit will be dropped. The Nile Shrine has the right to appeal the motion in the next 30 days.A stellar Soothing Waters season is winding down.  However, there still is time to arrange for a Watsu or enroll your child in private or group swim instruction prior to my closing date of Sept. 30th.  For more info you may refer to www.soothingwaters.net or call Liz at 766.8403.  I hope to see you in the water soon!

A few Samish Islanders have expressed interest in a salsa dance class being offered on S.I.  We are looking for an instructor and would enjoy having more people join in.  If you know of a salsa instructor or care to join us, please call Liz at 766.8403.

The Shore Lines notes the passing of Ross Kraig whose distinctive white beard made him easily recognizable on Samish Island. Having retired as a librarian in California, he moved to the Island in 1984. His wife, Shirley Heaton, had deep roots here, having spent summers since the early 1930’s with her Ely Heaton family at their cabin on West North Beach. Ross’ son and family still use the original building, and Ross enjoyed hosting the Samish Senior Singles there in summer months. Widely read and with an enduring interest in books, Ross was often consulted by individuals on their own book projects, and he always responded generously. He was a unique figure who is missed.
