December 2009

The Annual Samish Island Community CHRISTMAS PROGRAM / HOLIDAY PARTY will take place on Saturday, December 19th at the Community of Christ Church. Enjoy carols played by the Samish Island Sitting Band at 6:30pm. Entertainment provided by your friends and neighbors will begin at 7:00 pm. This year's program promises to be a lot of fun and there's still plenty of room for last minute volunteers of all ages. (It's been a long while since we've heard a "pre-school carol!") If you'd like to join in, call or e-mail Kitty Bluhm 766-4236, kittybluhm@wavecable.com with any ideas!Volunteers to help set up, serve refreshments, or do a final clean-up are also welcome to call/ e-mail. Come enjoy the evening with family and friends, and bring a plate of goodies to share if you are able. Plan on re-enacting an Island tradition!
There is still time to join the Samish Island Holiday Choir. We will meet at 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 12th, at the Yale's (9247 Marshall Rd.) and 5:00 PM on Saturday, December 19th, at the Community of Christ Church. Call or e-mail Lois Yale @ 766-8713 or lobo@fidalgo.net with questions.

The EDGEWATER GARDEN CLUB
wishes to thank all the community members who purchased a Wreath or Swag this Holiday Season! (A tally of the funds raised and distributed will be printed in January’s Shore Lines.) Much gratitude once again to the volunteers who skillfully, patiently, created a vast number of beautiful wreaths and swags. That wouldn’t have happened without those who donated the greenery, served as cutter assistants, readied bows, wired cones, finally cleaning up a sea of branches and returning the Community Hall to normal status. The Garden Club wishes all Islanders a great, nicely decorated! Holiday Season!

SAMISH ISLAND MEMORIAL CHAPEL
will present a CHRISTMAS PROGRAM on Sunday, December 20th at 7:00 p.m.  Come and join us in singing familiar carols; see a presentation by our youth; hear the choir and other musical specials; and enjoy refreshments and fellowship following the program.

The COMMUNITY OF CHRIST CHURCH will follow its regular Sunday schedule, with an 11 am Worship Service on December 27th. (The Island Community Club’s Christmas program, including seasonal caroling, takes place at the Church on November 19th.)

THE SAMISH ISLAND ARTS COMMITTEE would like to thank everyone who helped with the Holiday Arts Festival on Nov. 14th.  A special thank you to the people who helped with the set up, take down, and clean up, as well as those folks who were at the Church early on Saturday morning to help the vendors unload their art.  Our appreciation goes to all the islanders who came to shop, eat and enjoy, and we also thank the island vendors for their contributions. We had a successful Festival made possible by so many volunteers from our community.  The income netted from commissions and entry fees went directly to the Samish Island Community Center funds.  Now we are looking forward to our Summer Arts Festival already scheduled for July 31, 2010!

You’re Invited to a Samish Island Holiday Craft and Bake Sale Open House at Von Allmen’s, 11584 Blue Heron Rd. from 11 AM - 3 PM Friday December 11, & Saturday, December 12th. Please join us for some holiday cheer.  Coffee and cookies provided; craft items and baked goods also available for sale.  Islanders interested in selling crafts or baked goods please contact Vange at vange@wavecable.com or 766-6221.  Goodie Raffle each hour!  Come and enjoy the fun!

Shore Lines editors Nancy and Kathleen could not get this monthly to your paper box without the hardy troupe of faithful deliverers undeterred by rain, snow, ice, wind(?) (If yours blew away, just ask for another!) They are Marna & Galen Berger, Kitty Bluhm, Marlene Davis, Marilyn Gardner, Maria Hansen, Sue and Fred Miller, Bill Wells and Cheryl Wiggin.

70 years ago on Christmas Day of 1939, Great Britain’s King George VI broadcast a message to the people which included this quote:

I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year
Give me a light that I may tread safely into the
unknown,” and he replied, “Go out into the dark-
ness and put your hand into the hand of God. That
shall be to you better than light and safer than a
known way.”

It has been said that no other words so greatly inspired the devout of Britain to survive World War II. Perhaps it also has some resonance in 2009 as 30,000 more troops go off to war, and millions of Americans remain jobless.

YOGA ANYONE? It’a unfortunate that our plans for an alternative instructor this fall fell through.  Some of you mentioned that you have not found another class.  If there are enough people (about 6) who are committed to attending quite regularly, I would be happy to offer the class during Jan., Feb., and most of or all of March.  If you are interested, please call Liz at 766.8403.

If you have occasion to visit the new Skagit Valley Hospital, look for recent paintings by Samish Island artist Betty Miles. The Hospital Acquisition Committee selected five of her works (in addition to one purchased last year) for inclusion in their permanent collection. Betty’s large painting titled “Flower Fields” was one of the few sold at LaConner’s “Arts Alive” Festival.

Quarterly Round-up of STUDENTS IN THE NEWS:
---the Nov. 26th Skagit Valley Herald featured a colorful Sports Section front page photo of Tyler Williams named by the Herald Male “Cross-Country Runner of the Year.” Among Tyler’s achievements was the 5,000 meter State course where he led a pack of 4 Tigers in the top 20.
---Keala Bingham was cited several times in the Herald for her strong performance on the Women’s Cross Country Team.
---Mette Rousseau was chosen by the Burlington Rotary Club as October Student of the Month. She has maintained a 3.7 GPA while taking many advanced placement courses and accelerated classes. Mette is a 4-yr. letter winner in varsity soccer & tennis, and is dedicated to community service in a list of outside school activities.
