A Premature Passing

The many Islanders who knew Peter Nordlund were saddened by the news of his death on the morning of January 26th. Shoppers at Blau Oyster Co. over the years have to remember a pleasant, smiling young man who might well have filled your order, since Peter was a fixture at Blau’s for more than 33 years,. and even continued behind the counter part-time until a few months before his death. (Cards to the family may be directed to Megan Nordlund, P.O. Box 8, Burlington, WA. 98233. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice are requested).

THE FIRST DUTY OF LOVE IS TO LISTEN-- Paul Tillich. HAPPY VALENTINE DAY TO ALL!

LOOKING BACK IN HISTORY
In 1947, sixty-three years ago this month of February, a large barge carried 3900 cases of Japanese oyster seeds from the port of Anacortes to Samish Island, where Harvey Hopley’s tug boat picked them up for distribution to a list of Islanders who had invested in oyster beds. 500 of these cases were delivered to the Blau Oyster Co.
This occasion was remarkable in that it had been six years and a World War since the last oyster shipment had come through from Japan. According to theBurlington Journal of February 19, 1947, (as printed in Susan and Fred Miller’s Samish Island, A History) “Growers are elated at the prospect of again being able to obtain the Japanese seed, which was used extensively here before the war. Tests have proved it to be especially adaptable to these waters, and quite superior to the American-grrown product.”Last week I chatted about this with Paul Blau, currently head of Blau Oyster Co., whose grandfather, Edwin Arthur Blau started up his Samish Island business in 1935, and received that order of 500 cases of seed from Japan in 1947. Paul stated that American-grown oyster seed was not steadily available in prewar times, which prompted oyster growers to look towards Japan’s flourishing industry.
But by the mid-1960’s this trend had changed, Paul said, when the oyster seed industry in Japan found itself challenged by pollution problems that slowed exports, and this phenomenon coincided with both quality improvement and a steadier availability of the American-produced seed. The source of supply then gradually shifted back home.
