The 13th ANNUAL SAMISH ISLAND ARTS FESTIVAL
Saturday July 25th, 10 a.m.to 4 p.m., at the Community Hall Don’t miss this year’s festival.  Bring your family, friends, neighbors and coworkers to enjoy this Samish Island event.  There will be over 45 vendors, a number of new vendors along with many of your favorite returning artists.
You may purchase sandwiches, soups, cinnamon rolls, snacks and espresso in the kitchen, by Sigi.   Blau oysters, hot dogs and sausages will be available for purchase in the barbeque area.
Live music throughout the day will entertain.  Admission, parking and door prize tickets are all free. Thanks to Scotty Blau and the Ratfields for allowing parking on their property during the Arts Festival.  There will be an area at the entrance to drop off passengers. The commission from vendor sales supports
the Community Center, and our poster this year is by Samish Island Artist Sharon O’Brien.
The "Canopy Crew" is requested to help with set-up on Friday, July 24, 1pm at the Community Hall. You know who you are, I hope, and about 1-2 hours of time should be plenty. We also need a crew on Sunday at 1pm to take it down. Thanks for your ongoing help with this! Gail H.

BURNING BAN IN EFFECT - NO OUTDOOR FIRES

---thepresident’s column

We are having a VERY nice summer so far and aren't we ever so thankful?

The US Postal Service has given the word that the Samish Shore lines can no longer be put into mail boxes. (not legal to do so.) Beginning next month for those without a newspaper box of any kind, copies will be available for pick up at the Community Bulletin Board and at the Community Center. This may be an inconvenience for some, however, it is a decision outside our control.

The septic system at the SICC has been replaced. Many thanks to SI folks that donated $$$ for that upgrade. And thanks to The Drain Doctor (MikeTamman)
for executing the project in a quick and remarkably tidy manner.
The All Island Garage Sale, coordinated by Amy Colvin, was again a big success. Some people acquired, at a good price, some items they never dreamed they wanted, and some sold items they realized they no longer wanted.
By the time you read this, we will have already had yet another successful 4th of July parade. Kris and Roger Goodan once again tamed the parade participants and they deserve a bunch of thanks for volunteering.
I have been receiving e-mail communications about the removal of the stairs at the public access beach. At this point, I am not sure what can be done, however, I have much confidence in the ability of our community to pull together for a solution.
....Astrid

Residents have been spreading the word about the Dept. of Natural Resources (State DNR) closing the Day-Use Area at the end of Wharf Rd., thus eliminating the Island’s only public beach access. For lack of funding, the DNR is reducing services to many facilities at their managed recreation sites. In addition to removing out-houses and garbage cans, the staircase down the steep incline at the Samish Island location was taken away. In contrast to the Skagit Valley Herald write-up on Thurs-day and what the DNR official said to Danny Organ, “...the land is still open for you and others to enjoy; we just ask that you pack it in and pack it out,” the fact is that not only is the stairs gone, but a second sign looms large: “NOT A TRAIL,” and in smaller letters, “Violators subject to criminal prosecution.” (contmued on reverse)

Denny Organ has heard from Senator Rankin’s office pledging to research the case, and a DNR official will phone Denny this week to see what, if anything , can be done. Thanks, Denny, for your efforts.

As with everything, there is another viewpoint. Some Islanders don’t regret the closing. They miss an agency oversight factor as to garbage disposal, parking, and the enforcement of regulations regarding the harvesting of clams and other species.

ISLANDERS IN THE NEWS:
---Tyler Williams, often seen jogging around the Island, placed third on the same day in 3 different State Track & Field Championship races. against a wide field, and has been selected for membership on the SVH All-Area Track & Field team.
---Keala Bingham and Mette Rousseau were selected by Rotary International to spend 10 days this summer volunteering in Guatemala.
---Scott Colvin and Kevin Hoglund were among 15 area emergency service personnel completing the Emergency Medical Technician basic course in May.

---Ken Tiscornia, the attractive, robust-looking “poster person” for United General Hospital’s No. Puget Cancer Center in June, looks in the SVH photo as the last person in the world to be challenged by the disease. If Ken can contract it, who of us is safe? The Shore Lines salutes Ken’s willingness to go public on his private battle, encouraging community awareness, and penetrating barriers to the recognition of an all-too common challenge.
