----the president's column

Eileen Smith-Moreland has agreed (been drafted) to be the SICC secretary
and her experience with non-profits is a treasure. She has already
volunteered to use her expertise, and we welcome her aboard.

As we move into summer (high season on SI) there are several events
ahead including the Island Garage Sale, Fourth of July, Arts Festival,
among others. If you are able to assist, please let me know and I will
pass your name along to the appropriate person.

It is a nice day out there and I intend to use it to catch up on some
much needed weeding.

The *Edgewater Garden Club* will meet at 9:45 am for visiting and
refreshments on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at the Samish Island Community
Hall. The business meeting & elections will begin at 10:15 am followed
by a potluck brunch at 11:00 am. Please bring a potluck dish to share.
All are welcome to join us!

*The Purse:* Samish islanders driving into down are intrigued by the
large metal purse featured in the yard of the first house after turning
onto Bayview-Edison Road. This old farmhouse is the home of artists Ries
Niemi and Sheila Klein and their family. The curator of the Bellevue
Arts Museum asked Ries to design a piece for the museum, and a large,
over-sized purse seemed perfect for a city that focuses on shopping and
consumerism. The purse was on display at the museum for 18 months. Made
of stainless steel in Ries's studio at the farm, it is 14 feet tall, 10
feet long, 5 feet wide, and weighs about 500 pounds. Go to
_www.riesniemi.com <http://www.riesniemi.com/>_ to see more of Ries's
work, including the big cowboy boots we admired in his yard a couple of
years ago. Click on Current Projects to see the purse. Ries also
designed and constructed the signs for Slough Foods and Breadfarm in Edison.

*Make It Clean & Keep It Green!* Trash-walking with neighbors to kick
off SPRING! Meet at the park, on Saturday, May 16, at 9 am. Bring
garbage bags and gloves. Questions? Call Jack Lefebvre, 466-8255.

The 2009 13th Annual *Samish Island Arts Festival*will be held Saturday
July 25th. Once again there will be live music throughout the day, food
will be available, and artists will be selling their art work. If you
have not participated before and would like to be part of the Festival
please contact Janene at 766-6290. Mark your calendars now for this
wonderful Samish Island event. The proceeds from the festival go to the
Community Club for needed improvements.

year registration is required prior to the date of the sale. To

*Old Trucks: * On June 13, the Langleys will host a meeting of the
Cascade Chapter of the American Truck Historical Society. Islanders who
like old iron should come by and see the great old trucks that the
chapter has gathered. Noon-2:30 pm. Al Langley, 766-6504, 5348 Vicmar Drive.

I am forming a* "Samish Is. Book club"*. We would meet once a month at a
club member’s house to discuss our "book of the month.” (The member who
volunteers to host the next month's meeting selects the next book, and
provides coffee and tea. Goodies are potluck by other members.) Although
it's best if you can find the time to read the book before the month's
meeting, you are still encouraged and welcome to join the discussion so
as to add perspective and opinion about the book’s subject. The Book
Club will be exclusively for Samish Is. residents, as we will be meeting
in our homes. *Carol Sullivan will host the first month’s meeting at a
date to be determined when we have enough people signed up.* 10-12
people makes a fairly manageable club. Please call Carol 766-5310, or
contact by email carolsulli@hotmail.com.

Our very active Jack Russell terrier, Jack, has been part of our family
for over 5 years. He loves to be around people. We try to keep him from
roaming, but sometimes he goes for walks around the island and makes
friends. It seems that someone on the island brings him into their home,
feeds him, removes his harness or collar, bathes him, and keeps him for
several days. The problem is that our kids (we have seven) love him, and
it breaks their heart when he's missing. /The Fleury Family, 766-6865/
