April 2007

----from the Board President:
The Samish Island Community Club Board will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 18 at 7 pm. Any interested resident is welcome to attend.

POTLUCK REPORT: We had a full house (about 70 Hpeople) on March 24 to honor the members of the Samish Island Fire Department. Cricket Knutsen gave us an entertaining history of the SIFD and information on the dedication required of its members to train for and respond to our calls not only for fires, but for medical assistance. With reciprocal calls for fires and assistance in the Edison and Allen districts, Chief Tim Ratfield's crew of men and women do a lot more than most of us have realized. Truly, thank you.

The SICC DUES information and envelopes distributed with the January Shore Lines were put in paper boxes the day of the last big windstorm, so many did not find their copies. New cards and envelopes are attached with this month's edition.
State regulations requiring inspections of SEPTIC SYSTEMS every three years for simple gravity systems, and annually for all other types of systems become effective in July. Information on how you can save $200 and minimize pollution of our shellfish also is attached.
Two important dates:
May 22, Tuesday, Septics 101 Workshop, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., register with Steve Olsen at 360-336-9380.
June 16, Saturday, ALL-ISLAND GARAGE SALE

SUPPORT GROUP PROPOSED: An initiative has arisen to form a local cancer support group here on Samish Island. We have in mind persons currently confronting cancer or who are cancer survivors, as well as caregivers to cancer sufferers. It would be an informal group, with its participants deciding on the most helpful format. If interested, call Linda Strobel, 766-4082

Madeleine Hopley Blanton, another 4th generation Samish Islander whose ancestors put down roots here in 1877, passed away on March 14th. She was raised in the Harvey Hopley home near the corner of Seacrest Lane, across from the then prominent Atlanta Hotel which faced Bellingham Bay. In January, 1933, she and her sister Evelyn awoke in the middle of the night to see the sky ablaze with fire as the hotel burned to the ground and an era ended. Madeleine spent the WWII years with her officer husband Nathaniel (Cy) Blanton, volunteering in hospitals abroad before returning to live on Samish Island. Cy passed away in December after 64 years of marriage.

HIKING GROUP: It's time to dust off your hiking boots and head out on the trails! If you'd like to join other hikers on the second Thursday of the month, meet at 10 AM on April 12th at the Community Hall. The planned destination is Squires Lake. The hike is about three miles in length and the main elevation gain is right at the beginning---after that it's pretty flat. Call Marlene at 766-5093 for more information.
