As one walks around the island, there is still a lot of IVY to be seen that is climbing up our lovely trees. You needn't remove it from the tops of the trees, but you should cut and pull it back at the base of the trunks before it weakens your tree. If you have no ivy and would like to help Camp Kirby attack those trees that are being girded by the ivy, please call Helen Van Lohuizen : 360 -391-3098. Group help is most welcome. Thanks. Tis the SEASON FOR MADRONA BERRIES- if you are interested in trying to start madronas from seed, please call Karen 766-5096. It is best to plant them where they will stay since they are difficult to transplant although they can be moved with some success when very small. They should be planted where the soil is loosened, where drainage is excellent, and where there is some protection from other plants. In the wild, madronas usually thrive in the company of firs and other native trees and shrubs. Birds: Samish Island is a wonderful place for people to live, but it is also a good place for birds. On the weekly bird walk on Tuesday Nov. 6 we found an ORCHARD ORIOLE On Blue Heron Rd. Orchard Orioles are yellow & black, similar to a summer male Goldfinch. They are about the size of a Song Sparrow, much smaller than our Bullock's Oriole that breed here in the Summer. Orchard Orioles do not live anywhere west of the Mississippi. There are four records of Orchard Orioles in Washington state. 1 record is from eastern Washington, 1 from the coast and now the second from Samish Island. (The first Samish Island record was in 1991 on Scott Rd.) I am compiling a list of Samish Island birds. If youre interested , email me and I will email the list to you. If you have record of a species not on my list, let me know. I am always interested in seeing unusual birds, so please call me if you have a bird you think might be unusual. Thanks.
