December 2007

Come to the Samish Island Christmas Party Saturday, December 15th! Enjoy carols played by the Samish Island Sitting Band at 6:30pm. Entertainment provided by your friends and neighbors will begin at 7:00 pm. This year's program promises to be a lot of fun, and there is still room for YOUR number--call Kitty 766-4236 with any ideas Call also to volunteer to 1) set-up before the event; 2) do coffee, punch and cookie service; 3) help with final clean-up. Plan on enjoying the evening with family and friends, and bring a plate of goodies to share, if you are able!
N.B. The Scandia Saint Lucia Ensemble is extending a “Welcome Call” to all little girls who would like to join our presentation in the Christmas Program, December 15th. 766-6290

HOT FROM THE S.I.VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT!
On the Night Before Christmas, between 8 and 9 p.m., Santa Claus will cruise every street on the Island in the fire truck, with bells a-ringing, and a jolly HO-HO-HO echoing in the evening air. Parents can announce to their kids that Santa is signaling that it’s BEDTIME ‘til Christmas morning. (And you thought you’d already seen all novelties on Samish Island!)

DO NOTE: Extra Wreaths and Swags have been created by a talented team of evergreen handlers, so if you didn’t place a prior order, know that there are still some attain-able. Call Jacquie Stegner (wreaths, $15;swags $10.) (The Edgewater Garden Club distributes the proceeds among the S.I. Fire Dept., Camp Kirby and Friendship House.)

Samish Island Hats/Visors make great last minute holiday gifts! There are a few khaki color crab logo hats available (high quality, adjustable size, $15); and visors in both blue and khaki ($10). Also, I have one only deep navy blue crew neck logo sweatshirt size MEDIUM ($25). Contact Denny Organ at 766-5234 (proceeds to the Garden Club).

AND, a Samish Island History Book would also make a great gift.! Books are available from Fred & Susan Miller, 766-6548 or Gail Hopley, 766-6823. They can also be purchased at Blau Oysters, Rosabella’s, WDFoods Horen’s, Stowe’s and LaConner and Anacortes Museums.

The Samish Shore Lines extends Season’s thanks and appreciation to the intrepid deliverers who brave winds, rain and snow to get the monthly issue to your box!--Kitty Bluhm, Marilyn Gardner, Susan Miller, Sharon O’Brien, Bonnie Olpin, Marlene Swenson, Dawn & Bill Wells, Cheryl Wiggin, (and, new in December, Marna & Galen Berger!)

Notices from our Club President:
1) Community Center Potluck and Annual Meeting will be on Saturday, January 19. Dinner is at 6:30 - bring your dinner contribution and come enjoy the excellent food from your neighbors. There will be a short Comm. Club business meeting, and then a program to be announced. All Samish Islanders are welcome and encouraged to attend!
2) There will be some vacancies on the Community Center Board. Time commitments are minimal, and we need some new ideas and enthusiasm. Contact any Board member with questions.
3) SICC Tide tables are at Blau's in two forms -- the traditional calendars with high & low tide info, plus new graph calendars. These are traditional stocking stuffers not only for residents, but visiting clammers and crabbers. $2.50, all to SICC.
4) I am looking forward to seeing a big crowd at the Christmas Program. Thanks for all of your support this year. We've gotten quite a bit accomplished for the Hall and the Community, and I've made a lot of new friends. ---Chuck Davis

Everyone is invited to celebrate the birth of Christ! There will also be a Christmas Day service at 10:00 a.m. Traditionally, a story is told and there is a relaxed time of sharing experiences and singing some of the favorite songs of the season.

COMMUNITY OF CHRIST CHURCH will hold their special Christmas observance at the 11:00 a.m. Service on Sunday, December 23rd. Everyone welcome!

SAMISH SENIOR SINGLES will meet for brunch at Jacquie Stegner’s, 10749 Samish Island Road, on Friday, Dec. 28th at 11:00 am. Kindly RSVP to Jacquie.

Wouldn’t some healthy outdoor exercise put you in better shape for those Holiday calories? Join the Samish Island HIKING GROUP at its regular 2nd Thursday outing, at 10 a.m. at the Community Hall. (Destination will be detemined by weather and group leanings.) Questions? Call Marlene, 766-5093.

STUDENT SPORTS NEWS: Mette Rousseau was high-lighted in a large photo in SVHerald’s Sports section, as a B.-Ed soccer defense player who performed “outstandingly” as the team “sweeper”, helping the team to the State play-offs.

CAMP FIRE SAMISH COUNCIL would like to thank all of you who spoke with us at the Holiday Arts Festival and contributed to our legal fund. If you have continuing questions about our lawsuit, please feel free to speak to our Executive Director, Wendy Reavill (360-941-0025).
An upbeat item for us is the upcoming 85th anniversary of Camp Kirby! We are trying to locate all former campers and Camp Fire members. Please let Sue Sentner (766-6763) or Kris Goodan (766-6909) know who you are. Then, as now, membership in Camp Fire is not a requirement to attend Camp Kirby. Boys are also welcome.

As one walks around the island, there is still a lot of IVY to be seen that is climbing up our lovely trees. You needn't remove it from the tops of the trees, but you should cut and pull it back at the base of the trunks before it weakens your tree. If you have no ivy and would like to help Camp Kirby attack those trees that are being girded by the ivy, please call Helen Van Lohuizen : 360 -391-3098. Group help is most welcome. Thanks.

‘Tis the SEASON FOR MADRONA BERRIES- if you are interested in trying to start madronas from seed, please call Karen 766-5096. It is best to plant them where they will stay since they are difficult to transplant although they can be moved with some success when very small. They should be planted where the soil is loosened, where drainage is excellent, and where there is some protection from other plants. In the wild, madronas usually thrive in the company of firs and other native trees and shrubs.

Birds: Samish Island is a wonderful place for people to live, but it is also a good place for birds. On the weekly bird walk on Tuesday Nov. 6 we found an ORCHARD ORIOLE On Blue Heron Rd. Orchard Orioles are yellow & black, similar to a summer male Goldfinch. They are about the size of a Song Sparrow, much smaller than our Bullock's Oriole that breed here in the Summer. Orchard Orioles do not live anywhere west of the Mississippi. There are four records of Orchard Orioles in Washington state. 1 record is from eastern Washington, 1 from the coast and now the second from Samish Island. (The first Samish Island record was in 1991 on Scott Rd.) I am compiling a list of Samish Island birds. If you’re interested , email me and I will email the list to you. If you have record of a species not on my list, let me know. I am always interested in seeing unusual birds, so please call me if you have a bird you think might be unusual. Thanks. The Samish Island paintings of local artist Karn Kenaston are on display at the unique Rexville Grocery Gallery, 19271 Best Rd., until Dec. 31st. (daily until 7 pm)
