The
Samish Island Community Club Board will hold its monthly meeting
on Wednesday, February 21st, at 7 pm. Our thanks and well wishes to
Chuck Davis for his willingness to take over the Clubs helm for
2007.
From
the Community Club President
Our new Board has some changes. Thanks to Astrid Aamot, Richard Sentner
and Ted Rempel for stepping forward for this next year. Retiring officers
Gail Hopley, Duane Hopley, and Marilyn Gardner have put in a huge amount
of time and effort into finishing the Community Hall upgrades over the
past few years. Please thank these three when you see them for all theyve
contributed, beyond our imagining, to the major projects of constructing
the storage room and barbecue, and the general renovation of the Hall,
plus the work entailed in ongoing programs. Hopefully we wont
have such heavy demands on the new Boards time and energy.
We still
have a couple of projects that will need help, including extending
the sidewalk to the barbecue.
Additionally, if someone on North Beach could run a mower over the Halls
weed patch a few times a year, it would relieve a Board members
having to trailer a lawn tractor to the Hall to do the job. Please let
me know. Also, if you have any extra firewood after this winters
storms, we can use it for the Hall fireplace.
The
distribution of the January ShoreLines, with its annual dues payment
envelope, happened the day of the last big windstorm. If your copy added
to the general litter at the side of the road, extra envelopes are posted
on the bulletin boards at the Hall and at the big sign. Dues and any
additional donations are used to support the Samish Shore Lines and
the Community Hall (taxes, utilities, upkeep, potluck supplies, etc.),
as well as some small expenses for the Fourth of July parade and the
Christmas program. We had a great group of people volunteering last
year on the improvement projects (addition to building, new furnace,
barbecue, cleanup and painting, curtains, etc.), so we were able to
accomplish a lot with your donations.
Wed like to improve the Hall flooring within the next year
or two, so your current dues and donations will make this possible.
(If youknow of any method to improve the look of the floor at a reasonable
cost that would be suitable for easy cleanup from wreath making, kidsplaying,
potluck spills, and a good dance floor, please contact one of the board
members listed at the bottom of this issue.)

The Community Hall is a unique asset. The corporation that holds the
deed and takes responsibility for its maintenance is owned by all members
of the community. It is there for our use. Utilize the hall and the
barbecue more, please!
A reminder: pick up copies of the 2007 Tide Tables and Tide Graphs
available at Blaus.
Of the
several matters that were discussed at the January Annual Meeting, the
subject of emergencies and disasters is of special importance.
As mentioned in last months ShoreLines, the Community Hall will
be open during extended power outages, and otherwise as appropriate,
where those who need it can find some heat and cooking facilities, and
maybe some companionship. We were reminded that the Community of Christ
Campground has been designated as a gathering area in case of major
disaster earthquake. tsunami or other major disruption. Government
agencies seeking to provide aid will look to connect with local residents
at the Camp.---Chuck Davis

ISLAND
IVY-OUT COMMITTEE ASSEMBLES!
Did you or a neighbor have a tree blow down in the winter storms?
Did you know that the weight IVY adds to a trees limbs makes it
more susceptible to blowing over in a wind storm? Did you also know
that ivy is classified as an invasive/noxious weed with no known predators/pests
to keep it in check? A small group from the Samish Island Garden Club
has formed the Ivy Out Committee to help educate islanders
and take steps to control ivy here.
How can you help? First, take action to remove ivy on your own property.
If it is on trees follow these simple steps: 1) cut (girdle) the ivy
at about shoulder height and again at the base, without damaging the
bark (do not pull the ivy down from the tree as this could bring down
branches; it will die on its own), 2) pull the ivy away from the base
of the tree, approximately 6 feet if possible; pull up as much of the
ivy roots as possible. If you have ivy fields on the ground follow these
steps: 1) gently lift/tug in the opposite direction of vine growth,
try to pull up intact roots and never yank the vines as this causes
the ivy to snap at the root, 2) clear all the ivy from a total area
rather than just clear spots; this will help in long-term control, 3)
create ivy logs by pulling up and rolling into logs, 4)
pile the ivy, let it sit and dry out/decompose.
Need more information? Check these two helpful websites: http://ivyout.com
and http://www.noivyleague.com
or contact one of the Ivy Out Committee members (Gail Hopley, Kris Goodan,
Fonda Downs or Denny Organ). If you need help with ivy control on your
property (or are willing to help your neighbors), we are planning a
work party Sunday February 18th at 1:00 p.m. Please contact one of the
committee members if you would like assistance from a work team or if
you would like to volunteer to help on a work team.
Lets work together to control ivy on our island!
