POTLUCK
DINNER & ANNUAL MEETING, SATURDAY, JANUARY 20, 6:30 PM
Please
bring a dinner dish to share and come join your neighbors for an evening
of relaxed visiting and discussion. The program will include the election
of new officers for 2007 (new nominees are Astrid Aamot, Vice-President;
Richard Sentner and Ted Rempel, Members-at-Large) and a chance for community
members to discuss any issues of interest. Some possibilities are the
Block Watch Program, traditional events the SICC sponsors throughout
the year and any ideas for new ways to improve our community. The food
and company are always great - hope to see a good turnout!
The SICC Board will hold our monthly meeting on Wednesday, January 17,
7:00pm at the Comm. Hall. All Islanders are welcome to attend.
---ANNUAL
DUES: Attached to this ShoreLines is your annual dues payment envelope.
This is a subtle reminder that we would appreciate your annual contribution
of $10 (or more) towards the upkeep of the Community Hall and printing
of the Shore Lines.
Also attached is a Directory Card. Every year a new Directory of Island
residents is printed based on those who return this card. This year
we have a new twist. A few times throughout the year events come up
that don't coincide with the publication of the Shore Lines and the
SICC would like an easy way to spread the word so if you'd like
to receive information that potentially misses the Shore Lines cut-off
please include your email address on the card. Email addresses WILL
NOT be published in the Directory or used for any purpose other than
an intro-Island network of disseminating information. Thank you for
your support of the Samish Island Community Center!
As the outgoing President of the Samish Island Community Center I'd
like to thank everyone for their support of the SICC and it's programs,
and especially the wonderful Board Members with whom I have had the
joy of working. It has been my pleasure and privilege to serve as President
for the past few years. I have enjoyed all the special moments of camaraderie
that have resulted from SICC functions and projects thanks to the unwavering
support of our fine Community. I hope everyone realizes how lucky we
are to be a part of Samish Island life!

....and
how lucky we all have been to have had Gail Hopley at the helm of our
Community Center these recent years!! A giant Thank You!!
Some
SOLACE in the STORMS: With the rash of power outages that many of
us have experienced over the last couple of months, it has become obvious
that North Beach is somehow immune to these frequent disasters!
Some of our residents dont have safe alternatives for heat, cooking
and entertainment. Even if North Beach does lose power in the next outage,
the Community Hall will have some heat and a functional kitchen.
No organized system has been developed for the use of the building but,
in the event that we have another power outage this winter, the plan
is to open the Community Hall to those who might like a warm and lighted
place to hang out, cook some food, play a game, etc. Unfortunately sending
an email to let people know, during a power outage, isn't going to be
very productive . . . . so in the event of future outages, please assume
that the Community Hall will be available, during the day and evening,
for everyone's comfort and use.

A Retrospective:
The Community Club Christmas Program held in December at the Community
of Christ Church, is emerging as a singular event on the years
calendar. Though our Island can no longer come up with a roster of little
children and their appealing style of performance, the adults now participating
are bringing a range of new talent to our folksy Norman Rockwell
event. Our Band set the tone with carols. Then it was harmonic solos,
a brass trio, a hilarious Norwegian poem , all the way to
the lovely, trained voice of Joan Penney, and the nearly-professional
S.I. Chorale under the direction of Lois Yale(who also can captivate
via accordion.) Ginny Rameys piano supported the whole. MC Rob
Martin of necessity was on hand to weave all together with his running
commentary on our local state of affairs, especially bemoaning his far
western end of the Island, then still dark and power-less.
Kitty Bluhms energy orchestrated the program once again, &
many folks brought goodies, and pitched in before and after. Thank you,
Community of Christ Church for your hospitality, and, Islanders, dont
miss this unique happening at Christmastide, 07.

Public
Meeting at the Community Hall, this Thursday, January 11th, 7 pm
on insuring an important Quality of Life factor (postponed from Dec.
14th, evening of the big blow). Would you like to see open space preserved
in our area, and in our vista looking toward the Chuckanuts? You are
invited to an informational meeting to discuss the formation of the
Chuckanut Mountains Park District.
The proposal to form a new kind of park and open-space district is progressing,
thanks to the collaborative efforts of Skagit and Whatcom County residents.
The Chuckanut Mountains Park District (CMPD) has been proposed to encompass
an area from south Bellingham to Edison, with the regional focus on
Chuckanut-Blanchard Mountain area from the marine shoreline east to
I-5. Topographically, the area would include Samish Island. With full
views of the Chuckanuts and coveted open space, Samish Islanders have
an opportunity to help protect their viewscapes, conserve undeveloped
areas, and maintain an island quality of life from fast-paced development.
A park district would be the means for securing this. Members of the
CMPD citizen advisory committee will provide a presentation on Thursday
and facilitate a discussion of the elements in this new form of park
district, and its benefits to our community. Everyone is invited.(This
meeting is part of a larger public process to involve citizens in the
campaign to place the Chuckanut Mountains Park District on the ballot
in November 07. Please visit our web site at:www.chuckanutmpd.org
Or contact Frank Eventoff for more information: 766-8800.)

Island resident Biologist Mike Davison reported that nearly one
million ducks were counted in Skagit Cty. during 1st week of Dec., compared
to 372,000 last year (SVH,Dec.14) He believes many of these birds in
the aerial survey moved south from the frigid Fraser Delta, and have
been moving back since milder weather set in.

Martin
Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 15.---Citation on the Presential Medal
of Freedom awarded posthumously: Martin Luther King Jr. was the
conscience of his generation. A Southerner, a black man, he gazed on
the great wall of segregation and saw that the power of love could bring
it down...He helped us overcome our ignorance of one another....He made
our nation stronger because he made it better. His life informed us,
his dreams sustain us yet.
