The
SICC Board meets Wednesday, January 16, 7:00. The meeting agenda
includes selection of a slate of proposed officers for 2008. All Islanders
are welcome to attend. Let me know if you have other items to add to
the agenda.
- ANNUAL
MEETING AND POTLUCK DINNER. The annual meeting and first potluck
of the year is Saturday, January 19, at 6:30. We will try to keep
the meeting and election of officers short, so we can have more time
for a folk dancing program, with Ginny and Gary Ramey hosting.
- Very easy "village" dances will be taught (For example:
some are "walking step" dances that require little teaching)
- No partners needed
- Most dances will be in lines or circles
- Wear comfortable shoes
- Onlookers are also welcome to watch the dancing & enjoy the
wonderful ethnic music
Ginny and Gary's program a couple of years ago was a thumping success
-- so much so that a block supporting the floor vibrated out of position.
- ANNUAL
DUES. Annual dues/directory cards are attached to the January
Shore Lines. The suggested minimum is increased to $15 per family,
to help cover our expenses of hall maintenance and improvements, plus
our on-going activities that include publishing the Shore Lines, Fourth
of July Parade, Summer Arts Festival, Halloween party, Holiday Arts
Festival, Christmas program, hosting various community-oriented meetings,
and potlucks. Please consider an additional donation to help with
our two new major items of expense. Considering the expenses of heat,
electrical and other utilities, insurance, property taxes, and maintenance,
I believe we have used the communitys funds well.
- BIG
EXPENSES & REQUEST FOR DONATIONS. We are in the process of
replacing the septic system at the Community Hall. We were very surprised
to learn from an inspection that the existing system has a tank of
only 150 gallons, and that the sink and dishwasher basically empty
into a hole under the sidewalk. We are finalizing plans and permits
to do what has to be done: an entirely new septic system. The cost
will be about $14,000, including design, permits, electrical, installation
and taxes. Two members of the community, who have asked to be anonymous,
already have made extremely generous donations totaling $10,000 towards
this expense, but we need help from the rest of the community. If
we have sufficient funds after installing the septic system, the next
project on our list is refinishing the flooring of the Hall. Your
contributions will be put to very good use and are tax deductible
to the extent of the law as contributions to a 501(c)3 organization.
- ISLAND
DIRECTORY CARDS. Please return the attached cards with updated
info. for the Samish Island Directory, or check the box if you prefer
to elect out of being included in the Directory. 2008 Directories
will be available for $2 at Blau Oyster after about March 1. We need
a photo for the cover of the new Directory. Please send any contributions
to ghopley@wavecable.com.
- TIDE
CALENDARS. Both tide tables and tide graph calendars are available
at Blau Oyster, also $2.
Thanks
to all for all of your help with our activities in 2007.

Davis, SICC President
The
EDGEWATER GARDEN CLUB will meet at 9:45 AM for visiting and refreshments
on Tuesday, January 22, at the Community Hall. The business meeting
will begin at 10:15 AM Our program, "Bats: A Gardener's Friend",
will be presented by Barbara Ogaard of Bats Northwest, at 11:00 AM.
All are welcome!
Thanks
from the Edgewater Garden Club to all who made and purchased wreaths
and swags in December. The outstanding crew of 22 people worked for
three days making 82 swags and 56 wreaths, and had fun doing it. The
profit from their sale was split between the Samish Island Fire Dept.,
Camp Kirby, and Friendship House, with each organization receiving a
check for $500. It is very special to be part of this generous and fun
community, and we look forward to festive mailboxes, fences and doorways
again next December!!!

it true that a pleasant house makes winter more poetic, and doesnt

The
Samish Island Bird Walks led by Howard Armstrong will change format
for 2008. Howard will still lead walks, but not always on the same day,
and not necessarily every week. He wants the flexibility to walk when
the weather is reasonable, when the tide is right, and when he feels
like it. Anyone interested in knowing when the walks will happen should
send Howard an email requesting to be on the notification list. Then
he will email to all on the list with the day and destination of each
walk. godwits@wavecable.com

Retrospective
on the CommunityClubs 07 Holiday Party
A record-setting circa 110 Islanders attended the Dec.15 Christmas program
in the peaceful setting of the Community of Christ Church, the colorful
simplicity of the surroundings blending with the sense of bonding and
community among those present. The program combined a wide range of
offerings: from the magical and instrumental, to the comic and the inspirational,
a singularly-trained voice, the Sta.Lucia womens choir, and the
harmonized ensemble of mixed voices, including acappella selections.
Rob Martin, of the outrageous hats and hilarious commentary on Island
affairs, was the talented MC. Too many contributors and helpers to thank,
but Kitty Bluhm was the coordinator, and the Community of Christ Church
the gracious host.
Tribute from a Santa Lucia choir member: The Christmas progams
presentation of this traditional Scandinavian carol has its origin in
Janene Kenastons home, where she generously orchestrates a gathering
of the singers and musicians at a lovely Christmas tea. We want to say
thank-you. Janene, for your kindness, friendship and gentle
encouragementanother incidence of what makes our Island great!
Please mark your 2008 calendar for the 12th annual SAMISH ISLAND
ARTS FESTIVAL on Saturday, July 26.

Who
owns Samish Island?
The
swallows, I think, and the blue herons, more than I -- for they
have their nests even in the face of delinquent mortgages --
Houses
are individual and can be owned, like nests, and fought for.
But
what of the land? It seems to me that the earth may be borrowed, but
not bought; it may be used, but not owned. It gives itself in response
to love and bending, offers its seasonal flowering and fruiting.
But
we are tenants and not possessors, lovers and not masters.
Samish Island belongs to the wind and the rain, to the sun and the seasons,
to the cosmic secrecy of the sea, and beyond all--to time.

Island Resident (reprinted from 1996)
