July 2007

THE 11TH ANNUAL SAMISH ISLAND ARTS FESTIVAL will be held at the COMMUNITY HALL SATURDAY, JULY 28th, from 10AM to 5PM.

NEW THIS YEAR: WINE TASTING! OYSTERS ON THE BARBEQUE! Four Skagit County wineries will be doing wine tasting beginning at noon. You must be 21 to enter the wine tasting area and a small fee will be charged. Proceeds of the tasting and wine sales will benefit the ongoing upgrading of the Community Hall.
Blau oysters cooked on the barbeque will be available. Sigi will be there with other food choices and her famous cinnamon rolls. There will be ample seating under the awning.
Many of your favorite artists will appear, plus a number of new ones. A potter and a painter will be demonstrating "how they do it". There will be live music inside the hall as well as outdoors. At noon the String Band from Anacortes will perform. Door prize tickets will be free, as always, and there are some great prizes.
Please come and enjoy, and bring your friends. If you would like to put up a poster, send a few postcards, or give out some book marks, call Karen at 766-5096 (There is still room for a few additional vendors. If interested, contact Karen.)

If you have been part of the canopy crew in the past or would like to help, we will put up the BIG canopy starting at 2PM on Friday afternoon, July 27. Participating artists can start setting up between 1:30 and 6:30 that day.

Thanks to Scotty Blau and the Ratfields for allowing parking on their property during the Arts Festival. There will an area at the entrance to the Community Hall to drop off passengers.

New Samish Island Hats/Visors! You may have spotted the new Samish Island hats/visors at the 4th of July parade and these will be available again at the Arts Festival. The hats feature a great new Samish Island Dungeness crab logo and are a high quality design with a leather size adjustment strap (will not blow off in the wind/boating), nylon mesh interior (cool for the summer), and a thick cotton sweat band in the front. The visors are a nice design with “Samish Island” on the front. Both are available in royal blue and khaki; hats are $15 and visors are $10. These make great gifts for visitors!

items from the COMMUNITY CLUB PRESIDENT:
The second annual All-Island Garage Sale on June 16 was a big success, both in terms of moving stuff around from one garage to another and the important socializing. We owe Richard Sentner a huge thank-you for his work the past two years.

What a great Parade on the 4th! Thank you participants and spectators alike: it takes both to make it fun. Special thanks to Kris and Roger Goodan and Dan and Anne Raser for running the show at Fish Point. Thanks also to Dave and Vange Von Allmen for once again allowing the Parade to use their Fish Point property The weather helped too!

The SICC BOARD will meet Wednesday, July 18, 7:00 pm at the Community Center. All Island residents are welcome to attend. -----Chuck Davis

Hear ye, hear ye! THE SAMISH ISLAND HISTORY BOOK will be available for purchase at the Arts Festival on July 28th. Cost will be $15 per copy. (quantity purchase discounts are under consideration.) After publishing costs are recovered, profits will be divided between the Abby Memorial Fund for scholarships and the Samish Island Community Club.

The annual meeting of members of the SAMISH FARMS WATER ASSOCIATION will be held at the Samish Island Fire Station on Saturday, July 14th, at 9am. Members have already been notified through a direct Water Association mailing.

SAMISH ISLAND HIKERS will ready for a new adventure on the 2nd Thursday, July 12. Meet Marlene Swenson at the Community Hall at 10am. Destination will be determined “on the spot.” Do join in for some innovative summer exercise.

The SAMISH SENIOR SINGLES will enjoy the peak of
summer at Ross Kraig’s vintage cabin-on-the-beach. Do bring a “brown bag” lunch at 11am on Friday, July 27th, and maybe a sun hat for sitting out. Please call Betty Chowka to coordinate car-pooling. 766-8032.

MUCH TRAVELLED ROADS: Residents have reported that walkers, especially with children, should be on the left side facing traffic. Cars coming up behind them on S.I. Rd. curves may not be able to swing away in time. Drivers, please slow down to accommodate more summer walkers on our roadways. And walkers, joggers, bikers, do think safety!

ISLANDER IN THE NEWS: The SVHerald of June 7th featured an Anacortes ‘07 high school graduate who claims he is what he is because he had teacher Anne Chase-Stapleton as an 8th grade teacher. Her classroom lectures became the foundation for his love of literature and dream of becoming a h.s. English teacher. “ I just remember a big thing with her was her belief that all kids are creative inside. She brought out their brilliance.” The young man says that he sees a teaching career as a way he can pass on some of the lessons he learned from Chase-Stapleton

STUDENTS IN THE NEWS:

---Edison Elementary student Kyndall Bingham got a smiling photo in the SVH as she and co-students readied an elaborate slingshot for the school’s traditional Water Balloon Battle.

WSU BEACH WATCHERS on S.I.: A 2-hour roam along the wide expanse of the DNR beach (-2.6 tide) on June 30 had a dozen folk in awe at the multiple offerings of the sea, large&tiny: the brilliant colors of starfish, the complexity of anemones feeding habits, the hermit crabs and shore crabs ( to mention just a few), the sea worms and endless other tiny critters that skitted about in puddles under any upturned rock. Thanks to Catherine Davis for a very informative outing that sensitized us to the wealth of living beings that join us in regarding Samish Island as home.

Be like the bird
That pausing in her flight
Awhile on boughs too slight
Feels them give way
Beneath her and yet sings
Knowing that she has wings.
