ROUND-UP ON A SHORELINE WORKSHOP
I think the Community Hall would have been packed on April 28th if folks had known how interesting and informative each speaker was on the topic of the shoreline of this island. The presentations helped in understanding the larger context of our terrain—an island carved out by receding glaciers 10 to 12,000 years ago, and that is under constant realignment by the forces of wind, waves and tides. Speakers addressed the causes of bluff erosion, the measures that are helpful or counter-productive to slowing the process, the vital need to prevent sewage and other contaminants from defiling water quality— (imagine, we have 2 oyster companies in our immediate bays which test water quality twice weekly. Sporadic closed beds get reopened more promptly than in other areas.) Useful vegetation for shoreline protection was addressed, and how such can foster necessary food-chain elements for shell fish. Emphasis was placed on neighbors’ recognizing similar concerns and working together for results that one stretch of property alone could never attain. Thank you to Samish Islander Steve Hansen who directs the Skagit Conservation Education Alliance, for coordinating this free workshop and making it happen. (Hey, that lunch alone was worth the trip to the Hall!) SSL editor.

---HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY---

2nd ANNUAL ISLAND-WIDE GARAGE/ESTATE SALE SATURDAY, JUNE 16, 8 AM -- 2 PM.
Although we are still short by about 7 homes to reach out goal of 15 homes for this year's Estate/Garage sale, I am hoping people will be calling me in the next few days so that your address can be listed in the advertisement/maps that will be provided. (I will be out of town from 23 May to 4 June, so it really is important to get a hold of me (Richard Sentner, 766-6763) in the coming days. The cost is $15 per household to cover expenses (not $10 as previously mentioned). Balloons will highlight locations. Let’s hope for a clear day to coax crowds to the Island!

Do remember that SEPTICS 101 WORKSHOP happens on May 22, 7 to 9 pm at the Community Hall. State mandatory inspections of our septic systems become effective this July. (Just attending the workshop will save you $100 on the cost of that inspection.) Please register for this free session by calling Steve Olsen, 336-9380. (By the way, Steve Olsen is an engaging speaker--even on this disengaging, but vital, topic!)

EARTH DAY: The Skagit Valley Herald mentioned Pat and Strand Wedul as volunteering to remove invasive plants and restore native vegetation at the Swinomish Earth Enhancement celebration April 21st. What motivated them was connecting with the Snohomish Tribe while helping the environment. Leave it to Strand to inject his humor, “It’s a chance for some old retired geezers to do some good for the world.” (Did Pat wince?)

CAMP KIRBY is moving ahead with its usual excitement as everyone prepares for the campers! The Camp is open to any boys and girls who are interested in a day camp or a resident camp experience on Samish. Registration is still open: call 360-733-5710.

Do you want to attract the beautiful WESTERN BLUEBIRD to Samish Island? They are already in the Conway/Fir Island area and so coaxing them to Samish seems like a possibility. In fact last year one pair was sighted on Blue Heron Rd. by local birding expert Howard Armstrong, but they moved on. However, Howard says they’re always exploring for new territory and, if they discover bluebird houses here they’ll be encouraged to stay. (These are really nesting boxes—the bird is too fragile to nest outside. Flying insects are their food.) Janene Kenaston, a bluebird enthusiast, is willing to answer anyone’s questions (766-6290) The Skagit Wild Bird supply store (outside West Mt.Vernon) sells bluebird boxes for $28.99 & up. They have a make-it-yourself kit for $19.99. (The Prescott Bluebird Recovery Project in Oregon has already greatly increased that State’s Bluebird population.)

Volunteer drivers needed for Meals on Wheels delivery to homebound seniors in Mt. Vernon area. Milleage reimbursement available. Takes approx. 3 hrs. of a volunteer’s time with their car, one day a week. (Before committing yourself, take a test ride with one of our drivers and see if it’s something you want to do.) For more information, please call Glenda at the Mt. Vernon Senior
Center, 336-5757.

MONDAY, MAY 28th IS MEMORIAL DAY, when the casualties of the present war are especially in our minds and hearts. Martha Raddatz, ABC’s Chief White House Correspondent has spent time near the frontlines of the Iraq struggle each year since the start of the war. She has just authored a book, The Long Road Home, a Story of War and Family. She sees the burden of war as falling solely on the troops and their families and thus wants to tell their stories.
