May 2008

The SAMISH ISLAND COMMUNITY CENTER BOARD will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 14 at 7 pm. Any interested resident is welcome to attend.

MAY POTLUCK DINNER: The big potluck is Saturday, May 17, at 6:30. Steve Hoffman and Charlie O'Hara are putting together a great program disaster preparedness. We will hold the speakers to concise and interesting presentations. This will not be the usual ‘strap-your-water-heaters-to-the-studs-and-have-a-supply-of-bottled-water” program. Our exposures to storm, tsunami, extended power outages and the prospect of our temporarily being a real island again, present some unique concerns.

MARINE RECOVERY AREA PUBLIC MEETING: May 22, Thurs. 6 pm at the S.I. Community Hall, followed by Septics 101 at 7 pm. For additional info, check the letter mailed to each household, or the website www.skagitcounty.net/health, or call 336-9380 (also to register for Septics 101.

The EDGEWATER GARDEN CLUB will meet at 9:45 AM for visiting andrefreshments on Tuesday, May 27, at the beach---weather permitting---at the homes of Janene Kenaston & Sue Sentner, 11543 & 11549 Blue Heron Road. Inclement weather will move us into the Community Hall. The business meeting, including elections for 2008-2009, will begin at 10:15 AM with a Potluck Brunch following from 11:00 AM to NOON. Bring your favorite dish to share. All are welcome!

The SAMISH SENIOR SINGLES will meet once again at the Royal Fork restaurant in Mount Vernon at 11 am, on Friday, May 23rd. Any Island senior single is welcome. To carpool, call Betty Chowka, 766-8032.

THE SEA AROUND US:
Would you like to learn about eelgrass ecology and the web of life that thrives near our shorelines? WSU Beach Watchers invite you to Padilla Bay Interpretive Center on May 30 at 7 p.m. for a lecture by Dr. Jeff Gaeckle. He will share his knowledge of these habitats which are critical to the rearing and survival of many marine species and will discuss the State's eelgrass monitoring program. (Questions? - call Catherine Davis - 766-6705)

Home ground is the place where, since before you had words for such knowledge, you have known the smells, the seasons, the human voices, the houses, the lay of the land. It is the landscape you learn before you retreat inside the illusion of your skin. ---- Scott Russell Sanders

Editor’s Note: An account should have been included in last month’s Shore Lines of the Samish Island History presentation by Fred Miller and Gail Hopley in mid-March at the Skagit County Historical Museum in LaConner. Who expected an overflow crowd in the Museum’s sizeable auditorium on a mid-Sunday afternoon? It seemed like the place to meet your neighbors, since so many Samish Islanders showed up. The other sizeable segment of the audience were Skagit County residents, just plain interested in local history. (The program was part of a series sponsored by the Museum about the “lost cities” of Skagit County.)
There may be Islanders who aren’t aware that, in 1883, the towns of “Samish” and “Atlanta” occupied roughly the two ends of the Island’s neck, more hostle than friendly in their relations. And let this rivet your attention: when the seat of Skagit County was up for determination in 1884, Atlanta was one of the top 4 contenders, along with Mount Vernon (oh, what might have been!) (Susan and Fred Miller: Samish Island, a History, p. 85), & still available for purchase at Blau Oyster Co., WD Foods, The Rhododendron , Bow, and Horen Drugs and Stowes in Burlington (or directly from the Millers).

Items for the next Shore Lines should be submitted in writing to Kathleen Packard, 9920 Samish Island Rd., by 5 pm on June 5th, (first Thursday), 766-6752, or kwpackard@aol.com.

The HIKING GROUP will meet this Thursday, May 8th at 10 AM at the Community Hall. We'll see what the weather brings and decide on a destination. Let's all hope for some sunshine! Call Marlene at 766-5093 with questions.

Samish Island and the Tulip Connection: The April 17th Skagit Valley Herald featured a large photo of Tulip Town owner Jeanette DeGoede hugging Sarah Stewart, age 99, who helped pioneer the Skagit Valley tulip-raising business with her marriage to Sam Stewart in 1929. For the full story, including photos of a much younger Sarah, go to the “History of the Bulb Pioneers on Samish Island,” page 165 ff. in the Millers’ Samish Island, a History.
