October 2007

---from the Board president

The SICC BOARD will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, October 17 at 7:00pm. at the Community Hall. We will plan the Halloween party at this meeting – please join us if you can help in any way.
The SICC again will sponsor a HALLOWEEN PARTY for all Islanders at the Community Hall on Wednesday, October 31 from 5:00-7:00pm. There will be games and activities for the young ones, plus visiting and lots of ways to help out for the “grown-ups.” Volunteers and children are desperately needed to make this party a success. (Please contact any Board Member— names and phone numbers below). We need people to set up games and decorate the Hall during the day on Wednesday; bring treats and prizes for the evening; run the games from 5:00-7:00pm; and clean up the Hall on Thursday, November 1. Please volunteer to help in any way you can (call Chuck Davis), or come to the Board meeting on Oct.17 and help with the planning!
The third annual Salmon Barbecue on Sept. 29th was again a big success, despite a howling wind and driving rain. About 70 people went through four large local Chinook caught by Dave Prutzman and Chuck Davis.
Thanks again to Debbie Emerson for cutting and trimming the Community Hall lawn all year – it has looked great. --Chuck Davis

The SKAGIT MARINE RESOURCES COMMITTEE will meet at the Samish Island Community Hall from 9---11 am on Thursday, November 8. In addition to regular MRC business, the meeting will include a presentation entitled "Ecology and Potential Control Measures for the Bamboo Worm, in Samish Bay" by Freya Goetz. Freya is an Evergreen College student who studied the bamboo worm over the summer as part of the Western Washington University Research Experiences for Undergraduates program at Shannon Point Marine Center in Anacortes. The public is invited to attend the meeting. The bamboo worm is a non-native species which has been found in Samish Bay and is causing loss of oyster culture grounds.

adapted from an interview in the Shore Lines, Oct. 1996 : The Colvin home on North Beach, bright and airy, was constructed on a lot Bill’s father purchased 30 years ago. The family traveled up from California to enjoy the beach in summers, and built their present home to inhabit full-time in the mid-80’s.

Joan Colvin began specializing in quilt artistry in 1988 and has evolved into a richly creative artist and teacher of the art, having produced a line of work that could rest easily in museums anywhere. Although she dedicates most of her time to her own creations, she is regularly invited by quilt art guilds around the country to lecture and give workshops. Joan encourages aspiring quilters not to disconnect from the deeply-rooted American history of quilt-making, an art that pioneer women coould pursue into the long, dark prairie nights. So lovely were some of those early patchwork quilts that descendants lifted them from the beds to hang on their walls,
And Joan commented, “It’s a risky thing to face something you know must come out very right, or be very wrong. You don’t win; you just try to get close, try to catch a swift moment or two when you think you glimpse something of a vision you loved.”
Joan passed away on September 9th. The Island community sends condolences to her family. She will be missed by many.

SPORTS IN THE NEWS: This had to be volleyball player Danielle Nordlund’s month in the Skagit Valley Herald. Pictured on Sept. 14th dramatically jumping up for a kill, her performance was also noted on 5 other dates. On Oct. 3 she was quoted several times with respect to B.-Eds victory over Mount Vernon because “It was a huge deal —we’re big rivals.”

A stellar SOOTHING WATERS season has just concluded. My sincere gratitude is extended to all who have taken part in my offerings --from the depths of Watsu sessions, to the SVC Warm Water Bodywork classes, to the preciousness of the Aqua Babies and beginning swimmers— my life is truly enhanced by your presence. Thank you so much! Liz Bart, www.soothingwaters.net

HMS PINAFORE. AhoyMateys! 3 Samish Islanders are in the cast of Skagit Opera’s production at McIntyre Hall. This is a rollicking, zany comedy by Gilbert and Sullivan. Gary Ramey plays a supporting role as the Boatswain in charge of the ship’s crew. Ginny Ramey and Sarah Huntington are part of the entourage that accompanies the very pompous First Lord of the Admiralty wherever he goes. Pinafore is a delightful comedy about love, and a wonderful spoof of the English class system. Performances this Friday and Saturday evenings (7:30), and Sunday matinee Oct. 14 at 2pm. For more information or tickets go to skagitopera.org or call 866-624-6897.
