The
Garden club was organized in 1945 by Nellie Smith, Dolly Swenson,
Irene Pike, Freda Van Osterhaut, Estelle Houston, Minnie Priem,
Hazel Faulkenberg and Sally Walberg. Its first name was the
Sweet Briar Garden Club, named for the Sweet Briar Rose, which
grows profusely on Samish Island. It was soon thereafter renamed
the Edgewater Garden Club.
The
purpose of the Garden Club is to stimulate the knowledge of
gardening among amateurs, aide in the protection of native
trees, plants, and birds, and to encourage civic planting.
Membership
is open to any person interested in the club's purpose, willing
to pay the annual dues, and to abide by the bylaws.
Membership year is from June 1 to May 31.
