Important Information for Islanders

Always call 9-1-1 in an emergency! - We are REQUIRED BY LAW to be dispatched by Skagit 911 before we can respond.

For non-emergency communications, the Department Voice Mail is (360) 766-4314. We will be happy to consult with you in any of the following areas: burning bans and permits, home fire safety, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and fire alarms, emergency preparedness, Knox boxes (lock boxes), Firewise (wildfire prevention) and some home respite care issues.

Fire Protection Details

Fire protection and emergency services are provided by the highly-trained volunteer Fire Department Crew Members. We have a Darley Engine with a 1,000-gallon tank which is equipped with a CAFS (Compressed Air Foam) System. This is a cutting edge technology that allows much faster extinguishing of fires, with less water use.

We also have a Tender or Tanker that holds 2000 more gallons. In the event these two rigs are not enough and if hydrants are not practical, we have the option of calling in a Tender Strike Force with would bring Allen and Edison's 2000 gallon tenders to our aid to run a shuttle. There is also an aide rig that is certified to transport patients, although we almost never do.

There is a map available of all the hydrants and standpipes on the island.

Fundraiser by the Samish Island Firefighter's Association

The Samish Island Firefighters Association appreciates the generosity of Samish Islanders in their recent fundraiser. We began with the goal of purchasing radios for the crew for $2100.00. Thanks to you, and matching funds from the MacGregors, our final donation total was $4,298.00. A huge success for all islanders, who will benefit greatly with the new radios. Thank you so much for your help!

History of the Samish Island Fire Department

The Samish Island Fire Department began on February 17, 1949, when it got its first fire- fighting equipment. You can read more about this interesting history in Fred & Susan Miller's Samish Island: a History from the beginnings to the 1970's.(p. 214 to 220)

Prior to that 1949, the island was served by the joint volunteer fire district covering Bow, Edison, Blanchard, Samish Island and Allen.

The current volunteer crew meets every Monday night at 7 PM, but the meetings are not always at SIFD. We are periodically at Allen or Edison for joint training.

If you'd like to see some information not outlined below on this page, please let Tom Miller know.
